The GHI woods controversy

Greenbelt Homes Inc. owns 81 acres of the remaining Green Belt>/a> that the town was named after. One day in about 1993, Doug Love visited the GHI offices, and Mr. Friedman gave him access to a set of letters from the State concerning the Tree Farm tax relief plan. He discovered that
  • The plan lasts for 15 years, then has to be renewed.
  • The next renewal date is 1998.
  • The current plan called for a thinning of the woods by about 10%!
  • Doug Love Hugs a Tree
Doug brought this up with the Greenbelt Homes Inc. Directors, who established an ad-hoc Committee to write a new woods plan. A representative of the State suggested we save the woods by cutting them down. He then wrote a plan that would cut 50% of the trees, and clearcut 1/2 acre a year in a 20 acre plot. When we said we wanted interior forest animals, he asked what kind, and we said that we wanted deer and bluebirds. He then said that these are forest edge animals that need more edge and less forest. And for the trees to grow better, we had better cut them down. Then to provide homes for animals, we should ringbark any large healthy trees to provide trees the animals could dig holes in and live in. Doug came to a lot of meetings and argued with the guy.

The State representative suggested that we should cut down all of the interesting looking trees to produce more uniform board-feet for the sawmills. After a year of this nonsense, a permanent committee was apppointed. Doug was one of the first to sign up, and is still on the committee. A compromise was reached with another State employee, who suggested that we have the GHI staff thin a 10 acre plot. The Committee marked trees that could be cut with red paint, and some kids marked over some of these with gray paint. The woods we are trying to save. The State representative suggested that we should cut down all of the Doug had allready gotten the Greenbelt Greens to produce about 30 little wooden heart placques from a local craft store with "This Tree is Appreciated" on them. After being used to try to save the historic trees in the city parking lot, they were placed on some of the larger trees in the "study area". These talismans were respected here, and these trees were saved. The cutting was done while Doug was on vacation, and again City Councilman Rodney Roberts criticized Doug for letting it happen. Near the end of 1996, the GHI Woodlands Committee hired two forestry consultants to write a woods management plan that will please the state and keep the trees. back to Doug and Jane's Plants
