The State representative suggested that we should cut down all of the
interesting looking trees to produce more uniform board-feet for the
sawmills. After a year of this nonsense, a permanent committee was
apppointed. Doug was one of the first to sign up, and is still on the
committee. A compromise was reached with another State employee, who
suggested that we have the GHI staff thin a 10 acre plot. The Committee
marked trees that could be cut with red paint, and some kids marked over
some of these with gray paint.

to produce about 30 little wooden heart
placques from a local craft store with "This Tree is Appreciated" on
them. After being used to try to save the historic trees in the city
parking lot, they were placed on some of the larger trees in the "study
area". These talismans were respected here, and these trees were saved.
The cutting was done while Doug was on vacation, and again City
Councilman Rodney Roberts criticized Doug for letting it happen.
Near the end of 1996, the GHI Woodlands Committee hired two forestry
consultants to write a woods management plan that will please the state
and keep the trees.
