There are a number of nice trees "on the property", which is the .45' of
back yard assigned by
Greenbelt Homes to 3-D Plateau Place.
With no back fence, Doug believes "his property" extends all the way to
Laurel Hill, or maybe into Canada.
The stump of an 8" pitch pine a few feet west of the patio was exactly 8' south of an 8" white oak, and both had hammock hooks. They were perfect hammock trees. But the pine was brushing the house and was taken down in 2004. Then the oak died in 2007 and was taken down. Doug misses them, but the grass is grateful for a little sun.
| There is a 18" poplar further back that is sickly up until the 17 year
locusts come back, then it gets better. It is the last to leaf out in the spring.
An oak just beyond the neighbors' property fell into the woods a few years ago, just west of the Dennis Scanlon Trail (made by a neighbor who walked his dogs back there.) When another oak in that yard started to lean toward the 3-D Plateau backyard, Doug called GHI maintenance to cut it down. One night during a storm, Doug watched another large tree in the woods break off and do a complete somersault before bending a neighbor's fence in two.
| Doug was then roundly (and humorously) criticized by City Councilman Rodney Roberts for advocating cutting down trees! (Doug started the GHI Woodlands controversy in the first place!) | ![]() |
And, of course, everyone loves the Phantom Christmas Tree that appears every winter on the Sunday after Thanksgiving, and stays up until TwelfthNight. It is several sets of lights hanging on a poplar tree by a rope and pully, so there is really no pine tree back there. | ![]() |

Doug tries to protect the trees in his and neighbors' yards, as they keep the summer temperature down, absorb Carbon Dioxide from the atmosphere, produce oxygen, and provide places for birds and squirrels to nest. | ![]() Benjamin Dog used to explore the woods behind 3-D Plateau Place |
