The Fish
Doug keeps an aquarium of about 20 fish, mostly Neon Tetras and other
bright fish. They come and go, but some of them have lived for many years,
because Doug keeps their water filter running and feeds them every day.

Doug doesn't name his fish, unless they are born in the aquarium or
otherwise distinguish themselves. In past years there were 3 generations
of Blue Moons (which had numbers), and a surprise half-breed Tetra. None
of them are alive today, as there was a massive die-off in mid 1994,
just before Doug left for vacation. The only survivor of the dieoff was
a Silver Tetra named Foster when it was boarded with a neighbor. When
Doug returned from vacation, he cleaned the fishbowl, bought new plants,
gravel, fish, and a new filtering system, and retrieved Foster, putting
him/her/it in with the new fish. Foster died that night, and joined the
others in the
flower garden in front of the house.
In May 1997, Doug noticed at least one baby Tetra at the top of the
bowl, and plans to search for more.
Doug bought the 30 gal. aquarium at a yard sale when he first moved
to Greenbelt. It fits nicely in a shelf he bought from a failed shoe store
in Louisville in 1977. Doug's current project is to find a bicycle for
his fish.
Mom wants to get some angel fish, but can't find the room to keep them.
They are said to not get along with other fish in community aquaria, so
Doug hasn't added any angels to his collection.
